Cashmere and Angora are beautiful fabrics. It's a shame they should end up as carpet padding, or chopped up and recycled into very cheap grades of yarn. Did you ever wonder why sweaters sometimes shed like a mother or pill even though they don't have any nylon? This is generally due to the use of very short hairs that pull apart or unravel easily. Longer fibers are used in the most expensive fabrics, while more and more short hairs are used as the quality and expense of fabric goes down. While it is possible to recycle natural animal fibers you end up with a hideously cheap yarn that constantly sheds and pills.
Making hates is a super quick and easy way to recycle a great sweater. It's amazing how many people let moths get to their clothes. What do you do once there is an irreparable snag? A simple hat can be made from the woven edge at the bottom of the sweater. This area generally receives little wear. You can even use the neckline as the bottom half of a beret.
